NORTH PLAINFIELD — Investigators have charged a borough man with practicing unlicensed dentistry after finding a makeshift office and patients at his Somerset Street apartment, authorities said.

Jorge Nolivos, 52, was arrested Monday night after an undercover detective found him performing dental work on a woman at his home, Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey D. Soriano said. Authorities that day recovered several drills, molds and other dental instruments at the apartment, officials said.

The investigation began after the state Division of Consumer Affairs notified Soriano’s office about an unlicensed dentist identified only as “Jorge,” the prosecutor said. After determining that “Jorge” was Nolivos, detectives found that he would perform work on paying customers who came to see him for dental services.

An undercover detective who made an appointment with Nolivos entered his apartment around 6:30 p.m. Monday and sat down in a makeshift waiting room with two other individuals who sought the services, Soriano said. The detective then heard a drill being used in an adjacent room, prompting him to notify other officers outside.

Detectives then executed a court-authorized search warrant in the apartment, finding Nolivos performing dental work on an adult female, the prosecutor said. Inside the room they found items such as dental drills and tools, several dental molds and other instruments, officials said.

Investigators determined that Nolivos was not licensed to practice dentistry in New Jersey, Soriano said.

Nolivos was charged with unlawful practice of dentistry, Soriano said. He was issued a complaint and released on his own recognizance.
